Rio Grande Valley Birth Record Resources

Hidalgo County is one of the most populous counties along the Texas-Mexico border. Many births in the county go through local hospitals in McAllen, Edinburg, and other Rio Grande Valley cities. All of those births are registered with the Hidalgo County Clerk once filed by the attending medical provider.

For residents of the Rio Grande Valley who were born outside a hospital or in a remote area, delayed birth registration may have occurred. Texas allows delayed registration of a birth after the fact, but the process requires specific documents. The DSHS site has guidance on delayed registration. This is a common issue in border counties where some births in the early to mid-1900s were not promptly registered.

If you were born in Texas but your birth was never registered, DSHS can help start the process of creating a delayed birth record. You'll need supporting documents like school records, census records, or sworn affidavits from witnesses. The county clerk's office can also guide you on what's needed for Hidalgo County cases.

Edinburg Birth Certificate Fees

The fee for a certified Texas birth certificate is $23.00 per copy. This applies at the county level and the state level. Each copy you order costs $23.00, even if it's a second or third copy of the same record requested at the same time.

Texas also charges a search fee when no record is found. You pay $23.00 for the search, and if nothing comes up, the fee is not refunded. That's why making sure you have accurate information before you request is important. Correct spelling of the name, exact date of birth, and the right year all matter.

For residents who cannot afford the fee and have a demonstrated financial need, DSHS has a fee waiver program for people experiencing homelessness who need a birth certificate for identification. Call (888) 963-7111 or visit dshs.texas.gov to learn more about eligibility and how to apply for the waiver program.
