How to Request Aransas County Birth Records
Go in person to the Aransas County Courthouse in Rockport to get a birth certificate the same day. Bring a valid photo ID. If you are requesting a record for someone else, bring proof of your relationship. The clerk will verify your eligibility before processing the request.
For mail requests, download and complete the Texas birth certificate application form VS-140 from dshs.texas.gov. Include a legible copy of your ID and a check or money order made out to the Aransas County Clerk. Mail to the courthouse address. Processing by mail takes 2 to 4 weeks.
Under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 191, birth records are restricted for 75 years. Only the person named on the certificate, their parents, legal guardian, or an attorney acting for them can get a certified copy. You must show proof of this eligibility with each request.
You will need to provide the following to request an Aransas County birth certificate:
- Full name as shown on the birth certificate
- Date of birth
- County of birth (Aransas)
- Both parents' names including mother's maiden name
- Your relationship to the person named on the record
- A valid government-issued photo ID
Birth Certificate Fees
Aransas County charges the state-set fee of $23 for the first certified copy of a birth certificate. Each extra copy ordered at the same time is $3. These fees apply whether you order in person, by mail, or through the state office. Payment is accepted by cash, check, or money order.
If you order online through VitalChek, expect to pay a service charge in addition to the state fee. The total for an online order is typically around $35 to $40. Processing times for online orders are usually 3 to 5 business days, compared to same-day service for walk-in requests at the courthouse.
Note: Confirm current fees with the Aransas County Clerk before sending payment, as fees can change when the Texas legislature adjusts the state fee schedule.
Aransas County Birth Certificate Details
The long-form birth certificate is the most detailed version. It shows the child's full name at birth, the exact date and time of birth, the hospital or place of birth, parents' full names, parents' ages and birthplaces, and the attending physician's signature. This version is required for passports, driver's licenses, and Social Security cards. It is what most people mean when they say they need their "birth certificate."
The short-form version is an abstract of the birth record. It has a note printed on the face saying it is not valid for identity purposes. It works for school enrollment and many non-official purposes. If you are not sure which type you need, ask the agency or institution requesting the document before you order.
Texas birth records from the early 1900s through the mid-20th century may have limited information. The format and requirements have changed over time. Records from before 1950 may not include all the fields found on modern certificates.
