Texas State Birth Records

The Texas Department of State Health Services Vital Statistics Section maintains birth records for all 254 counties from 1903 onward. You can order through the state instead of the county if needed. The official Texas.gov portal handles online orders. For mail orders, use Form VS-140, the official Texas Birth Certificate Application.

State fees are $22.00 per copy. Online orders take about 20-25 business days. Mail orders take 6-8 weeks. Walk-in service is available in Austin at 1100 West 49th Street, Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Call 888-963-7111 for help or to check order status.

The state also handles corrections to birth records under Form VS-170. Under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 192, the state sets the required form and content for all birth certificates. Corrections to a child's information or a parent's information each cost $15.00. Other corrections may vary.

Birth Certificate Options

Texas offers the long form and short form birth certificate. The long form is a full copy of the original and shows any corrections made to the record over time. It is the required document for passport applications and some other legal uses. The short form is an abstract showing current information only. It is accepted for school enrollment, employment, insurance, and most other everyday purposes.

The county clerk can issue a long form certificate for births that occurred in Gray County. For births elsewhere, the county can access the state remote system and issue a short form abstract. A Verification Letter is a lighter document that only confirms a birth is on file; it is not a substitute for a certified copy. The Heirloom certificate is decorative only and has no legal standing.
