The legal basis for birth records in Texas is Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 192. This law requires all births to be registered and sets the form and content requirements for birth certificates. Every county clerk in Texas follows these same standards.

Types of Birth Certificates

When you request a Gregg County birth certificate, you can ask for a long form or short form. The long form is a copy of the original record and shows all corrections made over time. Use it for passports, some driver's license applications, and legal proceedings that need the full document. The short form abstract shows current information only and is accepted for most daily uses.

A Verification Letter is also available and simply confirms that a birth record is on file. It lists the name, date of birth, and county but is not a certified copy and cannot substitute for one. For framing or display, Texas also offers the Heirloom certificate, but it has no legal value. For Gregg County births specifically, the county clerk can issue the long form. Out-of-county abstracts come through the state remote system.
