Irion County Clerk - Vital Records

Irion County is one of the smallest and most sparsely populated counties in West Texas. Despite its size, the County Clerk maintains all local birth records and handles requests the same way larger counties do. The clerk's office is in Mertzon, which also serves as the county seat. If you were born in Irion County and need a certified birth certificate, the clerk there is who you contact.

For people born in other Texas counties, the Irion County Clerk can access abstract copies through the state remote system, which covers births from 1926 forward. Records before 1926 require contacting the county where the birth occurred, or the Texas DSHS in Austin.

Fees for Irion County Birth Records

The standard fee for a certified copy of a birth certificate in Texas is $22.00. This applies at both the county and state levels. If you need more than one copy, each one costs $22.00. A verification letter, which just confirms a record is on file, costs less.

In Irion County, you pay the clerk directly when you visit in person. For mail requests, send a money order or check made payable to the Irion County Clerk. Do not send cash. If you use a third-party ordering service, you will likely pay an additional service fee on top of the state fee.

Foster and homeless youth may receive free certified copies under Texas law. Active military personnel with deployment orders may also qualify for a fee waiver under Texas Government Code 437.217. Call the clerk's office ahead of time to ask about any exemption before mailing your request.

What Birth Certificates Are Available

Texas birth certificates come in several formats. The Long Form is the original certified copy and shows all corrections made to the record over time. It is required for passports and some other federal purposes. The Short Form is an abstract that shows only current information. It is accepted for schools, jobs, and most state agencies.

The Heirloom Certificate has the same content as the short form but is printed on decorative paper. It is not a legal document and cannot be used for official purposes. The Verification Letter is a simpler document that confirms a birth is on record, listing name, date, and county. None of these options replace a certified copy for legal use.

If a birth was not registered within the first year, a Delayed Birth Certificate may have been filed instead. These go through a separate process and are marked as delayed on the record. See Texas Administrative Code Rule 181.60 for details on how those are handled.

Texas Birth Record Laws

Birth registration in Texas is required by Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 192. The birth must be filed within five days. The doctor, midwife, or hospital usually handles the filing. The certificate goes from the local registrar to the county clerk and then to the state.

The Texas DSHS Vital Statistics Section keeps records at the state level and can issue certified copies as well. Walk-in service is available at 1100 West 49th Street, Austin, TX 78756. The state also accepts online orders at Texas.gov. For corrections, the form is VS-170, and more details are at the Texas DSHS amendment page.

For historical research, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission holds early vital records going back to the 1870s. Some births were recorded by county district clerks between 1873 and 1876 before statewide registration took effect in 1903. Those early records may be available through the archives for genealogical research.
