How to Get a Rains County Birth Certificate
To get a birth certificate from Rains County, you must visit the County Clerk's office in person. Mail requests are not accepted for local birth records. You need to be a qualified applicant. Texas birth records under 75 years old are restricted. Qualified applicants include the person named on the certificate, their parents, siblings, grandparents, spouse, legal guardian, or legal representative.
Acceptable forms of identification include a driver's license, state-issued ID card, passport, or military ID. Bring the original ID, not a copy. If you are requesting for a family member, bring documents proving your relationship. The requirements depend on your relationship:
- If you are the child of the registrant, bring your birth certificate listing the registrant as your parent
- If you are a parent, you must be listed on the certificate or have a court order showing parentage
- If you are a sibling, bring your birth certificate showing you share a parent with the registrant
- If you are a grandparent, bring a certified birth certificate of the parent linking you to the child
- If you are the spouse, bring your marriage license to the registrant
If you cannot make it to Emory in person, you can order through the Texas DSHS at dshs.texas.gov/vital-statistics. The state office at (888) 963-7111 handles phone and online orders for all Texas counties including Rains.
Information You Need to Provide
When you request a birth certificate at the Rains County Clerk's office, you will need to give the following information: the full name on the birth certificate, date of birth, place of birth, father's full name, mother's full maiden name, your name, address, and phone number, your purpose for obtaining the certificate, and proof of your relationship to the person on the record.
The more complete your information, the faster the clerk can find the record. If you only know part of the name or are unsure about the exact date, tell the clerk. They can sometimes search by approximate dates or partial information.
Birth records can be used for many things. Certified copies are used to prove identity for passports, driver's licenses, name changes, school enrollment, and Social Security applications. Make sure you need a certified copy and not just a verification of the record, since they serve different purposes and have different requirements.
