How to Request Bandera County Birth Records
The fastest way to get a birth certificate is to visit the Bandera County Courthouse in person. Bring a government-issued photo ID. Know the full name on the birth record, the date of birth, and both parents' names. The clerk will check your eligibility before processing the request. Walk-in requests are usually handled the same day.
Mail requests are accepted. Complete the VS-140 birth certificate application form available at dshs.texas.gov. Send the form with a copy of your photo ID and the correct fee by check or money order to the Bandera County Clerk. Allow about 2 to 4 weeks for mail turnaround.
You can also order online through VitalChek or through the Texas DSHS state portal. Online orders include a service fee in addition to the state certificate cost. Under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 191, only qualified applicants can get certified copies during the 75-year restricted period. Eligible requestors include:
- The person named on the birth certificate (must be 18 or older)
- Either parent listed on the record
- A court-appointed legal guardian
- A licensed attorney with documented authorization
Bandera County Birth Certificate Fees
The state fee is $23 for the first certified copy of a Texas birth certificate. Each extra copy ordered at the same time is $3. Bandera County collects these fees when you request a record at the courthouse. The same fees apply at the Texas DSHS state office. Online orders through VitalChek add a service fee, so expect to pay $35 to $40 total online.
Veterans and their eligible family members can request a free birth certificate under Texas law. Ask the clerk about the veteran fee waiver process when you call or visit. Proof of veteran status is required.
Bandera County Birth Certificate Contents
Texas long-form birth certificates include the child's full legal name, date and time of birth, the hospital or birth location, both parents' names and ages, parents' birthplaces, and the physician's or midwife's signature. This full-detail version is what you need for a U.S. passport, a Texas driver's license, or enrolling in Social Security.
The short form is a summary. It is labeled informational and not valid for identity. It works for school registration and many standard administrative uses. Order the long form if you are not sure which version you need, so you don't have to request another copy later.
Older records from Bandera County going back to the early 1900s exist but may be less detailed than modern certificates. The Texas State Library and Archives at tsl.texas.gov can assist with genealogy research involving pre-1950 records.
