Birth Registration in Uvalde County

All births in Texas must be registered within five days under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 192. The doctor, midwife, or hospital administrator attending the birth files the certificate with the local registrar. For births in Uvalde County outside city limits, the registrar is the County Clerk. For births inside Uvalde city limits, the City also serves as a local registrar.

Once filed at the local level, a copy goes to the Texas DSHS office in Austin. That means records exist both at the county or city level and at the state level. You can request a certified copy from either. However, for very old records or cases where a birth was missed at the state level, the local office is the best place to start.

If a birth in Uvalde County was not registered at the time, Texas allows delayed birth certificate filings. The DSHS handles these. Visit dshs.texas.gov for the requirements and forms needed to file a delayed certificate.

What Uvalde County Birth Records Show

A certified birth certificate from Uvalde County shows the essential facts about a birth. This includes the child's full name, date and location of birth, and both parents' names. The long form is a copy of the original record and is used for passports, name changes, and legal proceedings. The short form is an abstract of current information and is fine for school enrollment, employment, and similar uses.

Standard items on a Texas birth certificate include:

  • Child's full legal name at birth
  • Date, time, and place of birth
  • Sex and race of the child
  • Full names of both parents
  • Mother's maiden name
  • Attending physician or midwife's name
  • Filing date and certificate number

The parents' Social Security numbers are held at the state level and are not included in the legal copy that is released to applicants.
