Texas Birth Certificate Types
Texas offers a few different types of birth certificates. The Childress County Clerk and the state DSHS both issue all types. Which one you need depends on what you plan to use it for.
The long-form birth certificate is a full certified copy of the original document. It contains complete information about the birth, including parent names, place of birth, attending physician or midwife, and any corrections made to the record over time. This type is required for passports, driver's licenses in most states, and dual citizenship. The long form carries the registrar's embossed seal and signature.
The short-form certificate is a certified abstract. It shows only current information: the name, date of birth, place of birth, sex, and parents' names. It does not include a correction history. The short form is accepted for school enrollment, employment requirements, insurance claims, and most state and federal domestic uses. It is not accepted for passport applications.
The heirloom certificate is for display purposes only. It has no legal validity. You cannot use it as proof of identity, age, or eligibility for benefits.

Birth Record Laws
Birth registration in Texas is required by Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 192. The attending physician, midwife, or hospital administrator must file the certificate within five days of the birth with the local registrar. The local registrar sends a copy to the state. These rules cover Childress County births and all others across Texas.
Access is controlled by Texas Government Code Section 552.115. Records stay restricted for 75 years, then become public. No application is needed to access a record after the 75-year period ends.
Delayed birth registrations fall under Texas Administrative Code Rule 181.60. If a Childress County birth was not registered within one year, a delayed certificate can still be filed. The state registrar reviews and approves these filings based on the evidence provided. Delayed records are marked as such.
